One of our lady Club members Kelly who with her motorsport family are based in the USA, have been out again at last following the restrictions that Covid has caused. In the following report, she recounts her latest race weekend, where the family were competing with both her Unipower GT and her son's Mini Cooper Works.
" A little update. Two weeks ago I raced Tweety, my '68 Unipower GT competition model, in a VSCDA event at Blackhawk Farms Raceway in IL. I'd never driven the track before and managed only 28th of 33 who took time in Friday's 1st practice, at 1:42.841. With a 2nd practice and 2 qualifying sessions, I got that down to 1:35.153, good for 27th of 40 qualifiers.
I advanced to finish 22nd of 34 starters in Saturday's Sprint Race. And finished 16th of 32 in the Heat Race, after starting 20th.
Saturday's events ended with a 55 minute enduro, which ended 3 min early due to a late start. My 1st ever enduro, never having run more than 30 min at a time in the Unipower. From 18th starting spot, Tweety & I finished 10th overall & 3rd in class - behind my son, who managed 4th overall & my husband who was 9th overall. Not a bad enduro result, a family top 10 & 1 2 3 in class!
Sunday's Feature Race for our class saw a small field of only 14 cars take the green flag - a combination of many Spridget racers leaving after their special event and incoming weather that brought sprinkles for our last couple laps. I started and finished 7th, but not easily. I got back around the Triumph that passed me at the start, only to have him filling my mirrors the rest of the race! That turned out to be the inspiration I needed to run my best lap of the weekend on the last lap of the race, at 1:31.818. Still need to find 3/4 of a second, to match John's best, racing Tweety at Blackhawk last June.
Thanks to Gerry Hulford's advice, it appears we finally have the car properly adjusted & the issue of excess wear on the inner edge of the left rear tire corrected.
Thank you to Nancy & Chancel Moran for these great photos! "
Thanks for the report Kelly and here's to more success for you and your Unipower Competition GT in the future.
