Acknowledged as one of the most thoroughly engineered and best-built low-volume sportscars of the 1960s, just 73 Unipower GTs were built between 1966 and 1969. These had a tubular chassis, glass fibre reinforced plastic (GRP) bodywork, independent suspension (based on a Formula 3 car) and some innovative solutions for its time. The Unipower GT power unit was supplied by the BMC group. Most of the cars were fitted with the 998cc Cooper engine, installed in the “wrong” place, that is, at the rear and in a central / transverse position. Some of the cars were however fitted with a 1275 cc Cooper S engine, just like this example. Thanks to its daring design and the quality of its construction - rather unusual for its time - the Unipower GT became the most beautiful and sophisticated car based on Mini technology ever built.
This particular example with chassis no. UWF1012 is featured in the Unipower GT book by Gerry Hulford, and has competition history dating back five decades. Delivered new in May 1969, and since then the car's history has been fully documented, right down to details such as the early competition front air-dam being designed and manufactured by Mathwall Engineering.
Today the car is truly race-ready having been completely rebuilt by the engineers at RJN Motorsport . The Unipower has a new FIA HTP (valid until 2033), and the FIA race-spec Cooper S engine offers plenty of performance in this 500 kg lightweight car. Eligible for Le Mans Classic, Targa Florio, Spa 6 Hours and many other important events.
