RFN 699G was very unloved prior to April 1975 when purchased by myself its sixth owner. It had a number of non-original modifications done, including the fitting of a 1275S engine without updating the brakes, 12" wheels fitted to the rear to decrease revs at top speed instead of changing final drive gearing, a very poor paint job which soon blistered and flaked, non-standard tail lights and a fuel tank (now repaired to a high standard by a specialist). It was used as a great daily drive for over a year being very fast, could accelerate and handle phenomenally due to its power to weight ratio and mid-engine design. Sadly, the oil pump failed and the gear changing had become impossible, so it was decided to take it off the road for the complete rebuild that it deserved and cure all the issues. Car and engine were dismantled with a view to doing a total rebuild to a high standard. As always, commitments got in the way which did nothing to get the project progressed despite encouragement from Gerry at the Unipower GT Club and others. Now some fifty years later I have a totally dismantled 1969 car as I’ve realised that I will never complete the project and get it back on the road to a standard that we would all like.
The car has the original green logbooks and purchase documentation. A new tinted rear screen plus the original, a new set of clutch and master cylinders, new old stock suspension dampers and an unused rod change gearbox bought new some years ago.
There are no original Dunlop alloy wheels as they were mismatched and damaged, also missing are the speedo and rev counter and the Cooper S gearbox which was damaged beyond repair.
There is a lot of work to do to reach the standard required, but the space frame and bodywork are basically sound due to being keep in a dry garage. I have tried to reflect that in the asking price of £10,000, as if it were a runner I would be asking substantially more due to its initial purchase price and rarity value.
You are welcome to call, inspect the car and ask questions which could help you make your decision. I live in Gloucestershire where the car is garaged.
